Under Armour Sport Mouthguard Review
I know not everyone does, but I wear a mouthguard for everything. Boxing, jiu jitsu, MMA, everything. Even for just drilling BJJ. It seems that’s when those random stray elbows to the teeth happen the most. Since I wear it for everything I need to be able to talk. I’ve tried bigger football style mouthguards, which offer great protection, but make you sound like you’re eating a cheese burger. Lucky for me, this UA mouthguard was different.
Mouthguard Fit
This is a standard boil and bite. It doesn’t get any easier. I didn’t have any issues. I’ve made probably 15 of these by now. Not because they wear out, but because I lose them. I only screwed up one where the side wall fell over. I just boiled it again, and reformed it. Worked perfectly.
Mouthguard Protection
This is the most important aspect of a mouthguard – does it protect you. The whole reason we wear these is to not get our teeth kicked in, or chomp down and chip teeth or bite your tongue. I’ve worn thinner mouthguards thinking they would be easier to talk with. They were, but I could feel the pain in my teeth when I got hit. I’ve worn this UA mouthguard for jiu jitsu tournaments, sparring, and legitimate MMA fights. I’ve never had my teeth pushed in. Sure, I got bloodly lips and a sore jaw, but my teeth stayed intact. I’m not great at boxing defense either so I take some pretty heavy hits to he face. This mouthguard withstood the stress test.
Mouthguard Comfort
I would classify this as a “medium” sized mouthguard. I know some MMA fighters that have custom mouthguards made, that I’m sure are very good for protection, but they just don’t seem comfortable. They’re very large. If your mouthguard is messing with your breathing, that’s not good for combat sports. For this reason, the UA mouthguard size is perfect.
I’ve tried those very thin, harder material mouthguards that I mentioned above. While I don’t think they protect quite as well the real issue I had with them was how uncomfortable they are. They’re so hard. That kind of hard plastic in your mouth, even when you file down the edges, is extremely uncomfortable. I see a lot of people wearing them still, so maybe I’m missing something, but I absolutely HATED those things. Picture of one of those below.
Mouthguard Style
These UA mouthguards don’t come in the cool patterns and styles that some of the expensive ones do. Fangs and all that. They do come in a bunch of different colors though. Maybe 8 different colors? Good enough to be able to match your gear if that’s what you’re after!
Mouthguard for Braces
While I haven’t had braces since I was a kid, I remember it being a pain to find a nice mouthguard. This mouthguard seems like it would form well around braces. The other positive is the fact that if you screw up the fit, which you will if you have braces, you can always boil it again and redo the mouthguard.
Final Review of the Under Armor Mouthguard
Fit – 9/10 – It doesn’t get much better than this.
Protection – 8/10 – Good enough for MMA, but not quite as good protection as the bulky mouthguards.
Comfort – 10/10 – Comfortable, and stays put.
Style – 9/10 – No custom graphics, but has cool color options.
OVERALL RATING – 9/10
In closing, this mouthguard is cheap, easy to use, and solid. Great option no matter what sport you’re doing. This mouthguard works for both hobbyists and pros alike.
